This charm consists of taking a new container made of coconut shell (batil), or cleaning a used one thoroughly and writing around the neck the words: Jibrail, Mikail, Izrail; the following is then written at the bottom of the batil:
And another (favour will He bestow), which ye do love help from God and a speedy victory. So give the glad tidings to the believers. (Surah al-Saff : 13)
and the following on the inside:
"Peace! - a word for salutation from a Lord must Merciful" (Surah Yasin : 58)
The batil is then sent off to look for the suspect while the following verse is recited:
Verily, We shall give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before and that which they leave behind, and of all things have We taken account in a clear book (of evidence). (Surah Yasin : 12)
The batil will then begin searching for the culprit.
An alternative charm to catch a thief is performed by taking a wax gourd and having the name of the suspect written upon it. Yet another charm to catch a thief is to be written on paper and hung over fire for five or six days.
